Tried & Tested: Definitive List of the Best Places to Eat and Drink in San Diego

|

In 2016, I did something wildly out of character for a Type A planner like myself: I quit my job, broke my lease, and moved 3,000 miles across the country for a boy. A boy I had known for a grand total of six months. As you can probably guess, things didn’t work out between us in the long run. But on the bright side, I got to live in San Diego for a bit – the only time I’ve ever lived outside of New Jersey! And in my defense, we all make slightly unhinged life choices at 25 when our prefrontal cortex is still finishing construction.

That said, San Diego made everything worth it. It’s one of those places that’s almost too good to be true – gorgeous beaches, breathtaking coastlines, endless hiking trails, 70-degree weather year-round, and tacos so good they could make you emotional. Plus, it’s a stone’s throw from Mexico for easy day trips to Tijuana.

Ironically, about a year after moving back to New Jersey (post-breakup and full of life lessons, etc. etc.), I landed a job at a company headquartered in San Diego. So, the universe found a way to bring me back, but this time with a steady paycheck and no impulsive life decisions attached.

When people talk about the best food cities in the U.S., the usual suspects come up: New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Austin. San Diego rarely makes the list, but the food here is way more than just fish tacos. In my opinion, it’s a hugely underrated gem.

If you’re headed to America’s Finest City and want to eat and drink your way through it, I’ve got you covered. Below, you’ll find some of the best spots across San Diego’s most popular neighborhoods.

Coronado Island

Coronado Island (technically a peninsula!) is a stunning gem in San Diego Bay, offering the perfect blend of laid-back beach town charm and military history. One side is home to a massive naval base, while the other boasts miles of sandy beaches, a cute main street, and gentle surf, making it a favorite destination for visitors.

  • Hotel del Coronado: No trip to Coronado is complete without a visit to the legendary “Hotel Del.” This historic resort has played host to presidents, royalty, celebrities, and even a few ghosts. Whether you’re staying the night or just popping in for a drink, it’s worth experiencing the grandeur. Dining options here range from elegant bistros to beachfront lounges but if you’re not looking for a pricey dinner, grab a cocktail and soak in the ocean views.

Little Italy

A paradise for food lovers, Little Italy has cemented its spot as a premier dining destination in San Diego, where you’ll find authentic Italian eats, trendy restaurants, and buzzy patios. Fun fact: It’s the largest Little Italy in the U.S.!

  • Bencotto: Chic and modern, this Italian eatery is known for its handcrafted pastas and stylish ambiance. You’ll definitely want to make a reservation, especially on weekends.
  • Craft and Commerce: A quirky gastropub lined by taxidermy and old books with a stellar seasonal menu and expertly crafted cocktails. Pro tip: Don’t ask for vodka – it’s banned here for being “flavorless” and lacking in substance (I agree).
  • Herb & Wood: One of my favorite spots in Little Italy, this sprawling, rustic-meets-modern space serves wood-fired dishes and old-school cocktails. upscale locale serves rustic, wood-fired dishes & old-school cocktails. Think exposed brick, lush greenery, and stunning artwork inside.

The free-spirited, hippie little sister of Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach (OB) is all about laid-back, surf-town charm. From the bustling farmers’ market to divey beach bars, this neighborhood is effortlessly cool.

  • Elvira: A homey Italian eatery with recipes passed down from generations. Family photos on the walls make it feel like nonna’s house (I may be a bit biased, since my own grandmother’s name was Elvira).
  • Hodad’s: You might recognize this spot from Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, where the Mayor of Flavortown admitted it was the best burger he had ever eaten. Find out for yourself at this legendary burger joint and OB staple.

Pacific Beach

Ah Pacific Beach, or just PB to the locals. This neighborhood was where I called home when I lived in San Diego, so I have a soft spot for it. It’s a lively area packed with trendy bars and restaurants, attracting surfers, college kids, young professionals, and young families alike. The vibe is effortlessly casual (flip-flops are practically the dress code), and white it’s buzzing all day, it really comes alive at night.
